We are looking for talented people like you!

We are seeking Consultant Psychiatrists to work on a contracted basis in our Veterans Outreach Support (VOS) charity.  This is a regional veterans’ mental health service offering assessment, diagnostic and medication reviews, therapy, and substance misuse recovery work to veterans aged 18 and over, their partners and some dependants, in Portsmouth, the Isle of Wight and wider region.

VOS has been operating in Portsmouth since 2008, originally set up by veterans of the Falklands Conflict, to provide mental healthcare and mental wellbeing support to veterans of all the Services, and the Merchant Marine, and their families.  It provides monthly Drop-Ins in Portsmouth and Isle of Wight that offer a wide range of support from housing, employment, financial, legal, and a variety of social interventions alongside clinical mental health triage, which you would be part of.  In 2017 the charity was awarded the Queens Award for Voluntary Service and is a member of COBSEO (Confederation of Service Charities). It has an active role within the Portsmouth Military Mental Health Alliance and is currently working towards accreditation with the Quality Network for Veterans Mental Health Services (QNVMHS) overseen by the Royal College of Psychiatrists.

We have dedicated offices at the Royal Maritime Club – one of the oldest hotels in Portsmouth, first established in Queen Street in 1853.  At the hotel we have therapy rooms and space for clinics to be held, there is also onsite parking and a multistorey car park opposite.  We can provide discounted travel to the Isle of Wight.

Job Description

You will be an experienced Psychiatrist, acting as clinical lead working alongside a dedicated multi-disciplinary clinical team which ensures that service users receive the highest standard of quality care.  You will be on the GMC Specialist Register for General Adult Psychiatry and CCT or equivalent and have a current driving licence.

You will be able to offer a blended service which includes both face to face and online appointments at our premises in the Royal Maritime Club, Portsmouth, Hampshire, and from other peripatetic premises in Gosport, and the Isle of Wight.  The typical caseload is approximately 6 sessions a day with a caseload of 15-25 service users.  New assessments are allocated 1.5 hours and reviews between 30-60 mins.  You will be required to provide expertise on psychiatric conditions, including diagnostic reviews with PTSD and complex PTSD featuring heavily in the referrals we receive.  You will not be required to prescribe, but instead offer your clinical expertise in reviewing medication needs and advising GPs as appropriate.

You will be able to work autonomously and be adept in the timely compilation of professional clinical records, to monitor client progress toward successful outcomes, working with other team members in clinical management, psychology, therapy and substance misuse recovery, as well as wider members of the VOS non-clinical team. You will also work alongside outside agencies in support of our beneficiaries.

You will also be a strong advocate for UK armed forces and Merchant Navy veterans and their families. The role is on a contractual basis with hours to suit during normal office hours, of up to 1-2 days a week.

VOS provides a range of therapy options, substance misuse recovery support, wellbeing activities and welfare support to tackle loneliness.

If you have a passion for providing psychiatric support to Veterans with a range of mental health challenges and co-morbidities, then this role is for you, and we would love to hear from you.
