Merchant Navy Day : Recognising Those Who Keep the World Moving

Today (3rd September), on Merchant Navy Day, Veterans Outreach Support honours the commitment, skill and service of seafarers, both past and present.

Merchant Navy personnel play a vital role in our everyday lives. From transporting essential goods and keeping global trade moving to connecting communities around the world, their work supports our security, the economy and supply chains we all depend on.

Seafaring can also involve long periods away from home and loved ones, often in challenging conditions. That is why recognising the contribution, wellbeing and welfare of seafarers is so important. Behind every voyage are individuals and families who make significant personal commitments in service to others.

Veterans Outreach Support (VOS) has supported the Merchant Navy since 2008. More recently, it has become a constituent  member of the Merchant Navy Welfare Board and is very proud to have signed  the Seafarer Pledge

This pledge was launched by the Merchant Navy Welfare Board, inspired by the Armed Forces Covenant – it brings organisations together to recognise and support the contribution of seafarers, while promoting their wellbeing, opportunities and access to support.

By signing the pledge, VOS is reaffirming its commitment to the wider Armed Forces and maritime communities. We are proud to stand alongside organisations working to ensure that seafarers, veterans and their families receive the recognition and support they deserve.

Mike Powell, VOS Trustee and former Merchant Navy seafarer, noted:

“Since the year 2000 the 3rd of September has been celebrated as Merchant Navy Day, recognising the service of seafarers past and present and their vital contribution to maintaining our way of life in times of peace or conflict.

“VOS was proud to be among the first organisations to sign the Seafarers’ Pledge, committing to support seafarer welfare, career opportunities, the transition between sea and shore employment, recognition of maritime skills, and greater awareness of the importance of seafaring.”

Ian Millen, VOS CEO said:

“On behalf of VOS, thank you to all those who serve or have served at sea, and to the families, colleagues and organisations who support them. Your service matters, and your contribution is deeply valued.”

Veterans Outreach Support (VOS) were delighted to receive our Certificate of Commitment to The Seafarer Pledge from the Merchant Navy Welfare Board. In this video, our CEO, Ian Millen, shares a message about what this honour means to VOS. Read about it here
