Carp-e diem! 🎣🐟 – Lake Fishing with VOS

VOS spent the day fishing at Southwick Park Lake on 17th July. Check out our summary of the day:

The VOS Carp fishing day began at 09:45 at the RMC. Some of us used the transport whilst others made their own way to the venue of the day: Southwick Park fishing lake. On arrival we were met by Simon, our host for the day. After a short briefing on safety and procedures, and a hot beverage, the fishing began in earnest.

We were each given our spot in the glorious sunshine on the bank of the lake and provided with tackle. The day was primarily aimed at those who had not fished before, but also included some experienced anglers. The main goal was just for each person to catch a fish, and this was happening almost instantly!

The lake was home to Roach, Tench, Rudd, Eel and, of course, Carp. During the morning’s fishing just about every species of fish was caught and those taking part were all extremely happy. A BBQ lunch was provided, meaning we didn’t go hungry, and cans of drink and water were provided throughout the day. Sadly, after a further few hours of more fishing it was time to end the day.

The day was extremely well-organised, and all participants were well-supported and encouraged by our hosts. Thank you very much to The Portsmouth Royal Navy and Royal Marines Coarse Angling Association as well as to Rovers Fishing Tackle (Premium Fishing Tackle Shop on the South coast of England, specialising in all types of fishing), who offered VOS this opportunity; put on the day; provided all equipment plus food; plus 1-2-1 instructors; and general good humour! Amazing — we are so thankful.

It was a very relaxed and tranquil day. We all look forward to the next one and would encourage those who have never fished to take these opportunities to enjoy a great day out, learn a new skill and maybe even gain a new hobby.

VOS is immensely grateful to the Armed Forces Covenant Fund Trust and the Royal Navy & Royal Marines Charity, as without their support and funding we would not be able to provide activities such as this one.
